My Interview with Tonya Lewis Lee: Women’s Health Advocate and Founder of Movita

I was recently asked to try out a women’s multivitamin launched under a new brand of organic dietary supplements called Movita. Movita was founded by Tonya Lewis Lee, wife of celebrated director Spike Lee and women’s health advocate who as a busy mom knows firsthand the inherent challenges of navigating work, family, and wellness.

After having used the product for a few weeks, I engaged in the following Q&A with Lewis Lee during which I asked a range of questions about Movita and some of her advocacy efforts toward women’s health.

Q: Vitamins, minerals and other dietary supplements have become a multi-billion-dollar global industry and the market itself is becoming increasingly saturated with new products boasting unsubstantiated claims. What makes Movita stand out amongst others?

A: There are many brands of organic women’s multivitamins on the market today, but we felt compelled to create Movita to give women a cutting-edge, powerful product to support their wellness. Movita is different from many other supplements, even other organic vitamins, because of our proprietary scientific process. We use whole food ingredients that are individually grown and cultured in a cutting-edge probiotic fermentation system to ensure maximum absorption of nutrients. Most supplements will upset your stomach if you take them without food but due to this unique fermentation process, Movita vitamins can be taken on an empty stomach at any time of day and will be easily absorbed.

Additionally, the fermentation process that Movita vitamins are going through significantly increases bioavailability – up to 60 times more than conventional vitamins – and are easier to digest. This process also substantially decreases toxicity and increases the antioxidant effect of the vitamins and minerals in Movita, making it a very effective supplement.

Q: Has Movita been vetted in any clinical or consumer testing trials involving women?

A: FDA [Food & Drug Administration] guidelines define dietary supplements as special foods and not as non-prescription drugs. For this reason, FDA doesn’t prescribe as strict requirements for vitamins as it does for drugs, so no clinical trials are actually required for vitamins. At Movita, however, we take safety of our customers seriously. We manufacture our vitamins in an FDA registered facility in accordance with GMP [Good Manufacturing Practice] requirements. Additionally, we perform third party testing to ensure safety and efficacy of Movita vitamins.

Q: I noticed you don’t have a formal background in health, fitness or medicine. I’d love to know who or what inspired you to get into the women’s health industry?

I was inspired to get into the women’s health field when the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services asked me to be a spokesperson for an infant mortality awareness raising campaign: A Healthy Baby Begins with You. It was then that I became fully aware of the challenges that American women face when it comes to their health and I want to help. To me, health is everything and yet, living a healthy lifestyle in our culture can be difficult. I want to help women, which will ultimately help families and communities find a way to be as strong and healthy as possible. That is good for all of us.

Q: Where are you trying to take the women’s health industry with your work?

A: My hope is that with my work, I will contribute to pushing our culture towards creating options for all people to be as healthy as they can be so that as a society we are functioning at our best levels. While I encourage women to find and adopt the healthiest lifestyles for themselves, I also know that our communities must support those lifestyles, so it’s important that businesses and government work with us as well. Ultimately, I hope to bring some equity to the issues of health in our country.

Q: You’re a vision of beauty and health. What steps do you take to maintain good health and beauty?

Tonya Lewis Lee

A: In an effort to stay as healthy and fit as possible, I don’t eat meat or poultry. I also abstain from dairy. Most weeks I work out at least 4 days. And, I try to get as much sleep as possible. I also believe in taking good care of my skin. I use a Biologique astringent and have used Creme de la Mer for 20 years. But, I think most important, I really try to keep a positive outlook on life. The glass is half full, which I think has an impact on everything.

Like Lewis Lee, I’m a diehard advocate for women’s health and firmly believe that a healthy woman is the core of a healthy family. From our Q&A, I learned that we both share a belief in the importance of a holistic approach that’s inclusive of a healthy, balanced diet, regular exercise, and other positive lifestyle behaviors. To learn more about Tonya Lewis Lee and the Movita brand, visit
